When numbers look wrong¶
Start by identifying the number you expected and what it represents. An account balance, an envelope balance, and a projected amount answer different questions. A difference is easier to resolve once you are comparing the same thing.
Identify the amount¶
| Amount | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| Account Current balance | Starting balance and recorded account entries. |
| In envelope or Already in this envelope | Envelope spending, funding, and transfers under Latest moves. |
| Projected balance | Current envelope balance, dated plans, and future funding. |
| Left to plan | Available cash after the projection; see its guide. |
| Card Ready to pay | Reserved cash in the card's payment breakdown. |
An envelope balance does not have to equal a bank-account balance. Several envelopes can share the same account's cash.
If an account differs from your bank¶
- Check the cutoff. Compare balances that include the same transactions. A posted bank balance can differ from an app balance that includes pending items.
- Check the starting balance. Was it entered with the correct amount and date? Does it already include activity you entered again?
- Look for missing entries. Include fees, interest, income, purchases, and payments that actually happened.
- Look for duplicates. A payment may have been added as an ordinary entry and then recorded again through reconciliation.
- Check signs and splits. Saved spending entries are negative; bank-account inflows are positive. Spend and Reconcile expense take positive input amounts and convert them when saving; account Add and Edit use signed amounts. Splits must total the account amount, not add another transaction.
- Inspect older records. Use Load older entries if necessary.
The account balance includes recorded entries. Changing a transaction date does not turn it into an unrecorded plan; future-dated entries can affect the balance too.
Correct the identifiable entry rather than adding an unexplained amount just to force a match. Edit account changes the account name, so look in the ledger when investigating the opening entry.
If an envelope differs from your expectation¶
Open the envelope and inspect Latest moves. Check whether spending was assigned to the correct envelope, money was moved elsewhere, or nightly funding was paused.
For card purchases, cash can be reserved for payment instead of remaining in the spending envelope. Check the card breakdown alongside the envelope.
A projected allocation is not a recorded balance. If you need funds assigned today, review the Move Funds workflow in Adjust your plan.
If the projection still includes spending already paid¶
Check for an unresolved planned expense, or a target that still includes the purchase. Do not record the payment again.
If the actual transaction is already correct, remove the obsolete planned expense. If the purchase used an allowance without reducing it, update that target to the amount still needed. Editing or deleting a transaction does not reverse a previous Reduce next target adjustment.
If card numbers differ¶
Check the card's negative account balance against the positive Owed figure, then review Ready to pay separately. Opening debt does not automatically create a reserve.
Verify that Pay Card recorded the payment in both accounts and that the purchase was not counted again as payment spending. Record merchant refunds using Refund on the original purchase. A positive Credit balance stays on the card for later purchases, without changing bank cash; see Use credit cards.
Positive card credit also explains a difference between the browser's funding capacity and the nightly process: nightly funding includes that prepaid value, while the browser's forecast and available-funds controls start from bank/cash balances without adding card credit. See Positive card balances and available funds.
For a payment recorded with the wrong amount, date, or source account, choose Undo payment on its ledger row, then record the correct payment through Pay Card. Undo only corrects the app's records; it does not cancel a bank payment.
If a page or save fails¶
Use Try again for a failed load, or Refresh on the account page. Confirm you are signed in to the intended account if a budget or envelope is unavailable.
If a save may have succeeded, use Close and refresh where offered and check the saved records before submitting again. A delayed response does not prove that nothing was saved.
If the issue persists, note the page, action, date and time, and exact error message. Email support@line-budget.com with those details. Use fictional amounts or redact account details where possible, and never include passwords, verification links, or password-reset links.
For account access problems, follow Sign in and reset your password.
